Frequently asked questions
How is CAGR calculated?
CAGR = ((Final value / Initial value)^(1 / years) - 1) x 100. It is the constant annual rate at which an investment would have grown from its initial to its final value over the period, assuming no interim cash flows.
How is CAGR different from total return?
Total return is the overall percentage gain across the whole period. CAGR converts that into a smoothed per-year rate, which makes investments held for different lengths of time comparable.
