Frequently asked questions

What metadata does a PDF actually store?
Every PDF has an information dictionary holding a title, author, subject, keywords, the creating application, the PDF writer that produced it, and the creation and modification dates. Most of it is filled in automatically: the author is usually whatever name is registered to the copy of Word or the operating system the file came from, so a document you never signed can still carry your full name.
Does removing metadata change the pages?
No. The title, author, dates and hidden packets live in separate structures alongside the page content, so clearing them leaves the text, images, fonts and page size exactly as they were. The page count and layout are identical — only the descriptive entries about the file are gone.
Is it enough to clear the author box in Word?
Often not. Alongside the visible fields a PDF can carry an XMP packet — an XML block that repeats the title and author in a different format — plus per-page packets and application-private blocks, and no PDF reader displays those. This tool clears the XMP packet as well, and overwrites the object rather than merely unlinking it, so the text is not left recoverable in the saved bytes.
