Frequently asked questions

What font do memes use?
The classic meme font is Impact — bold, condensed, white with a thick black outline, usually in capitals. This tool uses Impact wherever your device has it installed, which covers Windows and macOS. Android, Linux and ChromeOS don't ship Impact, so there the nearest heavy font is used and the tool tells you so; for the exact classic look, make the meme on a PC or Mac.
What happens if my caption is too long?
It wraps onto more lines and the text shrinks until it fits. The size slider sets the largest the text may be; each caption then gets up to a third of the picture's height, so top and bottom text never collide in the middle. If a caption still can't fit at a readable size, the tool says so rather than shrinking it to a smudge — shorten it, or switch to the caption-above style, whose white bar grows to fit.
Can I use any image, and is there a watermark?
Any PNG, JPG or WebP from your device — a screenshot, a photo, a frame you saved. There are no built-in meme templates: you bring the picture, which also means no stock image licence to worry about. The download is your picture at its original resolution with your text on it and nothing else — no watermark and no sign-up.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The picture is read from your own device and the text is drawn onto it on a canvas in your browser; the finished meme is handed straight back as a download. Nothing is uploaded and no copy is kept. The output also carries no EXIF data, so the original photo's GPS location and camera details are not passed on to wherever you post it.
