- What is EXIF data?
- EXIF is a block of information your camera or phone writes inside the image file alongside the picture: the date and time, camera make and model, lens, shutter speed, aperture and ISO, and — if location services were on — the exact GPS coordinates where the shot was taken. Some cameras also record a serial number, and editing software adds its own XMP and IPTC blocks for captions, credits and keywords.
- Does removing EXIF data reduce image quality?
- No. The metadata sits in its own blocks inside the file, separate from the compressed picture. This tool rewrites the container without those blocks and copies the image data across byte for byte, so nothing is decoded or re-compressed — unlike opening and re-saving a photo in an editor, which re-encodes a JPG and loses a little quality every time.
- Is my photo uploaded to check its metadata?
- No. The file is read from your own device and parsed in the page, and the clean copy is assembled in memory on your machine and handed straight back as a download. Nothing is sent anywhere, which matters most for exactly the photos worth checking — GPS coordinates in an EXIF block point at your home or your child's school.
- Which formats are supported?
- JPG, PNG and WebP can be both read and cleaned. Colour profiles are deliberately kept so the picture still renders with the right colours; everything identifying is removed.
