Pages end up in the wrong order all the time. A scanner feeds a stack face-down and the last page comes out first. Two PDFs get merged and the appendix lands in the middle. A form is signed and scanned, and the signature page now sits at the front. The content is fine - only the sequence is wrong - and fixing the sequence should not mean printing and rescanning anything.
This guide shows how to rearrange pages with the Organize PDF tool, how to handle the two scanner mix-ups that cause most of the trouble, and what does and does not change inside the file when you reorder it.
Rearrange pages in four steps
- Open Organize PDF and choose your file. Each page is rendered as a small thumbnail so you can see what is on it, not just its number.
- Use the left and right arrow buttons on a thumbnail to move that page one place earlier or later. Each click swaps it with its neighbour.
- Use the cross button to drop any page you do not want in the new file, or Reverse order to flip the whole document in one click. Reset puts every page back in its original position.
- Click Save reordered PDF. The new file downloads as organized.pdf, and the original on your disk is left untouched.
Every thumbnail keeps the label of its original position - Page 7 is still called Page 7 after you move it to the front - so you can always tell where a page came from. The line above the grid shows how many pages the new PDF will contain, which is a quick check that you have not removed one by accident.
Fix a scan that came out back to front
Many sheet feeders read the stack from the bottom up, and some flatbed habits do the same thing by hand: you place page one down first, then page two on top, and the file ends up in exact reverse. The fix is one click. Load the file, press Reverse order, check that the first thumbnail is now the cover page, and save.
If only part of the file is reversed - say a 20-page contract where pages 12 to 20 were rescanned upside down in the stack - reversing the whole file will not help. Move the affected pages individually, or split the file first with Split PDF, reverse the problem section on its own, and join the parts back up with Merge PDF.
Worked example: put a double-sided scan back in order
A single-sided feeder can still scan a double-sided document: you scan all the fronts, flip the stack over, and scan all the backs. The catch is that the backs come out in reverse. Take a five-sheet, ten-page document. After both passes the scanned file holds the pages in this order:
- File pages 1 to 5: document pages 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 (the fronts, in order).
- File pages 6 to 10: document pages 10, 8, 6, 4 and 2 (the backs, reversed).
To restore reading order the thumbnails need to go 1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6 - using the Page labels the tool shows. The general rule for n sheets is that document page 2k - 1 is file page k, and document page 2k is file page 2n + 1 - k. For k = 1 in this example, document page 2 is file page 11 - 1 = 10.
The quickest way to get there with single-step arrows is to work from the end of the grid:
- Move Page 10 left 8 times, so it sits second, right after Page 1.
- Move Page 9 (now last) left 6 times, so it sits fourth.
- Move Page 8 left 4 times, so it sits sixth.
- Move Page 7 left 2 times, so it sits eighth. Pages 5 and 6 are already in the last two places.
That is 8 + 6 + 4 + 2 = 20 clicks for ten pages, and the thumbnails now read 1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6 - which is document pages 1 through 10 in order. For a longer document the same pattern holds: the backs fall into place one at a time, each needing two fewer moves than the one before.
What changes inside the file
Reordering copies each page across whole. The page's text, fonts, vector drawings and images are carried over as they are, so text stays selectable and searchable, and nothing is re-compressed or rasterised. A page that was 300 DPI before is still 300 DPI after. That is also why the file size usually stays close to the original.
What does not carry over is the document-level wrapping around the pages. The saved file is a new PDF built from the pages you kept, so:
- Bookmarks (the outline panel in a PDF reader) are not copied, since they belong to the document rather than to any one page.
- Document properties such as Title and Author start empty in the new file.
- Clickable internal links, such as a table of contents that jumps to page 12, can stop working because they point into the old file's page list.
- Fillable forms may lose their fields. If a form needs to stay fillable, reorder it before filling, or fill it and flatten it with Fill PDF Form first.
For a scanned document - the most common reason to reorder - none of these apply, because a scan is just a stack of page images with no outline, links or form fields.
Reorder, remove or split: which tool to use
Organize PDF is the right choice when you want to see the pages and make a handful of moves. A few neighbouring tools cover the cases where it is not:
- To drop many pages by number - say pages 3, 7 and 15 to 40 - Remove Pages takes a range like 3, 7, 15-40 and is faster than clicking forty crosses.
- To pull out part of a document as its own file, use Split PDF.
- To stitch several files together, Merge PDF lets you set the file order before joining them; then fine-tune individual pages here.
- If a page is in the right place but sideways, Rotate PDF turns it without changing the order.
Privacy: your PDF stays on your device
The thumbnails are rendered and the new PDF is assembled in your browser, so the file is never uploaded. That matters for exactly the documents people most often need to reorder - signed contracts, bank statements, medical records and ID scans. If the PDF is password-protected you will be asked for the password first; the file still does not leave your machine.
When your pages are out of order, open Organize PDF, fix the sequence with the thumbnails in front of you, and save a clean copy in under a minute.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I change the order of pages in a PDF for free?
- Open Organize PDF, choose your file and use the arrow buttons on each page thumbnail to move it earlier or later. Reverse order flips the whole document, the cross removes a page, and Save reordered PDF downloads the result. It runs in your browser with no signup.
- Does reordering PDF pages reduce quality?
- No. Each page is copied across intact, so text stays selectable and images keep their original resolution. Only document-level extras such as bookmarks and the Title and Author properties are not carried into the new file.
- How do I fix a double-sided scan where the back pages are reversed?
- If you scanned all the fronts and then all the backs, the file holds pages 1, 3, 5... followed by the even pages in reverse. Reorder the thumbnails to alternate front and back from each end: for ten pages the order is 1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6 by original page number.
