How to convert CGPA to percentage: where the CBSE 9.5 multiplier comes from, why your university's number differs, how to work out CGPA from grade points and credits, and a full worked example.

A CGPA of 8.47 is a perfectly clear number right up until a form asks for a percentage. Then you discover that your board, your university and the employer reading the application may each want a different figure from the same grade card, and none of them will tell you which rule they used.

There is no single national conversion - only a small set of published rules, each belonging to a specific institution, plus a lot of folklore filling the gaps. This guide covers the rules that are actually written down, how a CGPA is built from grade points and credits, and what to do when yours is not on the list.

What a CGPA actually measures

CGPA stands for cumulative grade point average. Each subject earns a grade point - on the common Indian 10-point scale, O is 10, A+ is 9, A is 8 and so on down - and each subject carries a credit weight reflecting its teaching hours. The CGPA is the average of those grade points weighted by credits:

CGPA = sum of (grade point x credits) / sum of credits

The weighting is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters. A four-credit theory paper pulls roughly twice as hard as a two-credit lab, so a plain average of your grade points will not match what the university prints. SGPA is the same arithmetic over one semester; CGPA is the same arithmetic again, over every subject you have taken or over your semester SGPAs weighted by their credits. One formula, three names.

A worked example, end to end

Take a semester of five subjects:

  • Subject 1 - grade point 9, 4 credits, so 36 weighted points
  • Subject 2 - grade point 8, 4 credits, so 32 weighted points
  • Subject 3 - grade point 7, 3 credits, so 21 weighted points
  • Subject 4 - grade point 9, 2 credits, so 18 weighted points
  • Subject 5 - grade point 10, 2 credits, so 20 weighted points

The weighted points add up to 127 and the credits to 15, so the CGPA is 127 / 15 = 8.4667, printed as 8.47. An unweighted average of those grade points would have given 8.60 instead.

Now convert that 8.4667 to a percentage under each of the three published rules, and watch them disagree:

  • CBSE / CISCE, multiply by 9.5: 80.43%
  • Standard 10-point, multiply by 10: 84.67%
  • VTU, subtract 0.75 then multiply by 10: 77.17%

Same grade card, a spread of more than seven percentage points. This is why "what is my percentage" has no answer until you know whose rule applies. Where the CBSE 9.5 multiplier comes from

The 9.5 is not arbitrary, and it is not a rounding of 10. CBSE looked at its own results across several years and found that students landing in the top grade band, A1, which covers 91 to 100 marks, averaged about 95 marks. The grade point for A1 is 10. Divide 95 by 10 and you get 9.5, the factor that maps the grade scale back onto the mark scale it was derived from.

Two consequences follow. First, a perfect 10.0 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100% - the ceiling is built into the rule. Second, the same multiplier works subject by subject, which is what a form asking for marks in one paper usually wants: a grade point of 8 corresponds to roughly 76% in that subject.

Why your university's number is different

Beyond school boards, conversion practice fragments:

  • Many 10-point universities and autonomous colleges simply multiply by 10, treating the CGPA as a percentage divided by ten.
  • VTU applies a 0.75 offset first, so percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) x 10. A 10.0 tops out at 92.5%, and any CGPA below 0.75 produces a negative number, which is the formula telling you it does not apply.
  • Some universities publish a banded table instead of a formula, so no single multiplier reproduces their output exactly.
  • Others refuse to convert at all and will issue an equivalence certificate on request. If your university does this, that certificate is the number to use - it outranks any formula.

If your institution is not one of the three built in, do not guess a multiplier that looks close. Find the rule in your academic regulations or on the back of your marksheet, then enter it under Custom multiplier in the tool. On a 4-point CGPA scale rather than a 10-point one, the equivalent multiplier is 25, since 4 x 25 = 100.

Converting a percentage back to CGPA

Every rule runs backwards. Divide by 9.5 for CBSE, so 77.9% gives 8.20. Divide by 10 for the standard scale. For VTU, divide by 10 and add the 0.75 back, so 74.5% gives 8.20 as well. The Percentage to CGPA tab does this directly.

One caution: a reverse conversion is only valid with the rule that produced the percentage, and running it through the wrong rule gives a confident wrong answer. Because the CBSE rule caps at 95%, anything above that yields a CGPA over 10 - the tool flags this rather than quietly printing an impossible grade.

Rounding, and the case of the missing 0.04

This is the discrepancy that sends people looking for a second calculator. Our example CGPA is 8.46667. Round it to 8.47 first and then multiply by 9.5 and you get 80.47%. Multiply the unrounded 8.46667 by 9.5 and you get 80.43%. Both are arithmetically correct; they differ because one of them rounded twice.

Round once, at the very end: carry full precision through the calculation and round only the figure you write down. The calculator works this way, which is why a CGPA it displays as 8.47 converts to 80.43% rather than 80.47%. If your university's published percentage differs from yours by a few hundredths, double rounding is almost always the reason.

The 4.0-scale question

Applying abroad brings up the American 4.0 GPA. The tool shows a 4.0-scale figure - CGPA divided by 10, times 4 - deliberately labelled as reference only, because credential evaluators such as WES and individual admissions offices apply their own grade-band tables that are rarely linear. Send them your official transcript and use whatever their conversion produces; never put a self-computed 4.0 GPA on an application as if it were official.

Which number to write on the form

In order of authority: a percentage printed on your marksheet, then an equivalence certificate from your university, then the formula in your academic regulations, and only then a general rule. Whichever you use, say which one - "78.0% (CGPA 8.2 x 9.5, CBSE conversion)" is checkable, whereas a bare number invites the reader to redo it under a different rule and find a discrepancy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CGPA x 9.5 formula valid for engineering or university marks?
Only if your university says so. The 9.5 multiplier was derived by CBSE from its own school results - the average marks of students in the 91-100 grade band - so it describes the CBSE grading scheme and nothing else. Plenty of universities do use a x 9.5 or x 10 rule, but plenty use something else: VTU subtracts 0.75 before scaling, and several publish banded tables that no single multiplier reproduces. Check your academic regulations or the reverse of your marksheet, and if the rule there is not one of the built-in options, enter its multiplier under Custom multiplier.
Can I convert SGPA to percentage the same way?
Yes - SGPA and CGPA sit on the same grade-point scale, so the same conversion rule applies to both. SGPA is just the credit-weighted average over one semester rather than over your whole programme, and the tool does not care which one you type in. Semesters carrying more credits then pull proportionally harder, which is exactly how universities compute it.
My form needs a percentage but my university only issues a CGPA. What should I do?
Ask your examination or controller's office for an equivalence certificate first - many universities issue one on request, and a certificate settles the question in a way no formula can. While you wait, use the conversion rule printed in your academic regulations and state it explicitly next to the number you write, for example "84.7% (CGPA 8.47 x 10 per university regulations)". Showing your working is what protects you: if the reader applies a different rule and gets a different figure, the discrepancy reads as two conventions rather than as a misstated mark.
